Ultra high purity piping for the hypersonic wind tunnel
As part of the wind tunnel overhaul undertaken by NASA at Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, CA, P.C.I. has completed the major refit of the hypersonic wind tunnel oil house.
Water to oil plate and direct insertion heat exchangers and sophisticated controls combine to preheat the cold oil on startup and cool the oil in operation for the main fan bearings.
A Taylor Microscan microprocessor based controller with full P & ID capability and Masonelian Camflex control valves combine to control the temperature of 480 gpm of oil. An L & N 2500 digitally controlled recorder with keyboard programming handles recordkeeping and alarm set points.
All the pipe and fittings mostly 6″ dia and 4″ dia were fabricated in our shop to ANSI B31.1 with full X-ray N.D.E. to ASME Section V then pickled and passivated. After complete installation the whole system was flushed and filtered to sub 25 micron level.
